Listen in as co-hosts Mark McNease and Rick Rose welcome John Fischer to this week’s ‘Aged to Perfection’ podcast. John has been the Director of Music at MCCNY since late 2001. A classically trained pianist, John grew up in a Midwestern Catholic church with a large music program, and made his debut in the children’s choir there at age 7. Formerly the music director for St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chicago, he led the St. Joseph Children’s Choir (which he founded) to national prominence with their 3rd-place prize in the Quaker Oats Gospel Choir Competition A composer and performer, John writes and arranges music for MCCNY and for several New York area indie bands. John has presented lectures on inclusive language at the two most recent UFMCC general conferences.
The recipient of honors from The Songwriters Hall of Fame and The Independent Music Awards, John’s music has been featured on MTV (US and UK), PBS and VH-1. He holds a BFA in Piano Performance from DePaul University, where he studied with Mary Sauer, principal keyboardist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While living in Chicago, he was lured into the wacky world of improv comedy, and became a musical director at ImprovOlympic.
