LGBT friendly and affordable housing for older adults is a critical need in communities across the country, something I learned first-hand at the White House National LGBT Elder Housing Summit in early February. One of the attendees and panelists was Dr. Imani Woody, who’ll be joining me on an upcoming Aged to Perfection podcast (listen for it soon!).
Dr. Woody is the Founding Director and President of Mary’s House in Washington, D.C., a development of affordable independent living for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors. Please consider donating or becoming involved if you’re able!
Imagine living in a building where everybody knows your name and accepts you just as you are. Visualize a place where communal living feels like home with a shared living room, shared dining room, shared kitchen. See yourself in your own room with closet space and a private bath.
You have access to the laundry room, exercise room and the therapeutic hot tub. Picture yourself sitting on the front porch, in the rocking chairs, smelling the honeysuckles and talking with old and new friends. Need to go out? Public transportation is only a block away. Need limited coordination of city and community services? Just ask a staff person.
The mission of Mary’s House is to lead in addressing issues related to affordable independent living for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors. Mary’s House works to achieve a high quality of living for LGBT Elders.
Welcome to Mary’s House. Welcome Home – Anticipated opening date: Winter 2016
We’ll be getting much more information on LGBT older adult housing needs and on Mary’s House with Dr. Woody on the podcast. Be sure to listen in!
